Here I am
I never said I was prophet
Never said I heard things clear
But there’s a ringing in my eardrums
And there’s a voice within my heart
So I run
Into the mouth of a harbour
to the belly of a ship
And I was dreaming when the storm hit
Now I’m drowning off the side of the boat
I taste sea salt in my throat (ah, ah, ah, ah…)
I wake up in dark
Don’t know if my eyes are open or whether they’re shut
I guess these moments seem bright as my body slowly dies
That chemical induced high, as I walk into the light
But the light never takes me
Death itself forsakes me!
And in the belly of a whale,
A deeper truth illuminates me
It holds, humiliates me,
Drawing hymns, and desperate pleas
Prayers swimming in the seas
My God just please don’t leave.
I scream my bargain for release,
‘You can do anything, anything with me!’
I stand up,
I feel the sun along the shoreline
A temporary bliss,
And then the burden of your kindness,
And the bruising of my ribs
I walk on,
Making peace with all my hauntings,
Shaking hands with all my ghosts,
And this is not the end I chose, (not even close)
I’m in the last place that I wanted to be,
but I can’t stop moving my feet. (ah, ah, ah, ah…)
People, shadows, places,
Moving pictures, moving faces,
Standing up now, people hear me,
Speaking words now, ground to greet me,
Closing eyes here, hesitation,
I’m alive still, celebration,
Like a bedroom on the river,
There’s a stillness, there’s a shiver,
Like a cell now multiplying,
There’s a newness, there’s a dying,
There’s a spirit in the city,
There’s a movement in the city
There’s a hope within the city,
There’s a mercy in the city,
Dying debts within the city,
Kings that wept within the city,
Words that swept around the city.
A fire burns within the city,
But they’re not burning in the city,
A weight is crushing in the city,
But they’re not crushed within the city,
There’s a name within the city,
A Holy name with the city,
I felt rage within the city,
When I saw how good you are.
I see the paint but not the picture
I see the paint but not the picture
I see the paint but not the picture
I see the paint but not the picture
I see the paint but not the picture
I see the paint but not the picture
I see the paint but not the picture
The crooked lines but not the figure.
I hear a sound but not the music,
I see your heart but I can’t choose it,
I see a cross but not a saviour,
I want a god not a redeemer.
You give a cure I chose a plaster,
I see a chest but not a treasure,
I want your hand but not your face,
I want your justice not your grace.
You’re so hopeful that it hurts me,
So much mercy that it scares me,
Your love it taunts and tears me
Then you breathe me back to life.
I see a drop you fill an ocean,
I pray a prayer you start a motion,
I want to make you fit my story,
But really I’m part of your story… (Glory! Glory! Glory! Holy! Holy! Holy! Holy! Holy! Glory and Majesty! Righteous Restoration! Reconciliation! Freedom! Freedom! I want to know Your Heart!
